SAMPLE LESSON PLANS

Included on this page are two sample lesson plans, one for a middle school level music theory/composition course and one for a high school level beginning guitar course. The middle school lesson plan's topic is concerned with students listening to music from Japanese composers (aligns with the sample unit plan in this portfolio) and interpreting their emotional response in a representational/abstract visual project, corresponding with elements of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL); the high school lesson plan's topic is concerned with students memorizing open position chords on the guitar and applying them to common progressions, with the long-term goal of the unit being a summative assessment wherein students demonstrate their knowledge of and ability to accurately perform all open position chords. Both lesson plans were designed to accommodate different learners through varied learning activities and environments that provide options for students to creatively demonstrate their learning in contexts relevant to the discipline and allow for sequenced lessons within a unit that develop towards an appropriate summative assessment with frequent formative assessments.
